"It is harder to see than it is to express. The whole value of art rests in the artist's ability to see well into what is before him." -Robert Henri.

The turn of the 20th century was a time of great innovation in the history of painting. While a strong current swept painters to ever-increasing levels of abstraction, some saw the observation of the natural world to be of great importance. The techniques used by Henri and his contemporaries to describe what they saw were innovative and constitute the subject of this six-week class. Working in direct observation from the model, you will gain a working knowledge of the principles, pigments and techniques that were common in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
